Your Complete Move-Out Guide | 2026
Here is the room-by-room move-out cleaning checklist we have used on thousands of Seattle move-outs. Copy it, print it, or hand it to whoever you book. The whole thing is below, free, no strings.
I am Logan, founder of The Dazzle Cleaning Company, the gayest cleaning company in America. We have cleaned a lot of empty homes, so I know exactly where a move-out clean goes right, where it goes sideways, and which forgotten corner quietly costs people their deposit.
Use this page however you need it. Clean the place yourself and check off as you go, or read it so you know precisely what a good move-out clean should include before you book one. Either way, you walk away knowing the home is actually done.
Prefer to watch instead of read? Here is the whole move-out clean, start to finish, in one go.

The move-out cleaning checklist (room by room)
Work one room at a time and save the floors for last in each room. (The full order of operations is further down, if you want the whole game plan.) Here is everything that should get touched.
Kitchen
- Inside and outside of the refrigerator, shelves and drawers included, and behind it if it rolls out
- Inside and outside of the oven, plus the stovetop and range hood
- Inside and outside of the microwave and dishwasher
- Inside and outside of every cabinet, drawer, and shelf
- Countertops and backsplash
- Sink, faucet, and the area around the garbage disposal
- Spot-clean the walls, with extra love where grease collects
- Baseboards, then sweep and mop the floor
Bathrooms
- Tub, shower, shower door, and tile
- Toilet, inside and out, including the base and behind it
- Sink, faucet, and countertop
- Inside and outside of all cabinets and drawers
- Mirror and any glass
- Exhaust fan cover
- Spot-clean the walls
- Baseboards, then the floor
Bedrooms, living areas, and hallways
- Dust every surface, shelf, and built-in, inside and out
- Wipe down doors, door frames, and door knobs
- Window sills, window frames, and vacuumed-out window tracks
- Light switch plates and outlet covers
- Hand-wash the baseboards
- Wipe down railings
- Vacuum and mop or vacuum every floor, closets included
The easy-to-miss spots
These are the ones people forget, so give them a second pass:
- Behind and under the appliances
- Inside cabinet corners
- Window tracks
- Vent and register covers
- Light fixtures
- Switch plates and outlet covers
- The top edges of doors and the door tracks
Want to carry this around the house? Drop these lists into your phone’s notes, or just print this page and check off boxes as you go.
What’s included in a move-out clean (and what’s not)
A move-out clean is our full checklist plus the deep stuff an empty home needs. It is the most thorough thing we do, because nobody is living there and every surface can finally get reset. The headline difference from a regular clean is the part you cannot do while a home is full: the insides of every cabinet, drawer, and appliance.
Here is the quick tour of what is actually included.
Add-ons and what’s not included
So the checklist above stays honest, here is the fine print. I walk through it on video here too, because the not-included list is where most surprises hide.
These are not part of a standard move-out clean, and a few are available as add-ons:
- Windows and blinds (add-on)
- Basements, attics, and garages (add-on)
- Grout, paint splatter, light bulbs, and chandeliers
- Mold and any bio-hazardous materials
- Anything outside the home
- Anything that cannot be safely reached with a two-step ladder
About that last one: anything above a two-step ladder gets dusted with a nine-foot extension duster. So if you have vaulted ceilings, your high fixtures and fans get a light dusting rather than a full detailed clean. I would rather tell you that now than have you wonder later.
How we handle your appliances
This is where good companies separate themselves, so it is worth knowing. If your fridge is on wheels, we pull it out and clean the sides, underneath, and behind it. If it is not on wheels, we leave it put, because dragging it would scratch your floor and that helps nobody. For the oven, we do not pull it out by default, even when it is on sliders, because it does not always slide back in flush against the counters. We will absolutely do it by request. We just want you to know the why, so there are no surprises on the day.
This is exactly the kind of thing to ask any company about before you book, because there is real variety in what counts as “included.” If a company will not tell you, that is information too.
How to clean an apartment before moving out
Doing it yourself? Here is the game plan that keeps you from cleaning the same spot twice.
Empty the place first. Furniture, food, the stuff in the back of the closet, all of it out before you start. You cannot clean inside a cabinet that still has your cereal in it.
Then go top to bottom, one room at a time. Dust high, wipe the middle, clean the floors last, so anything you knock loose lands on a surface you have not finished yet. Move through the home room by room rather than task by task, and the whole thing goes faster.
Do a final walk-through against the checklist above. This is where you catch the window tracks and the top of the fridge you would have sworn you got. The list is the difference between “looks clean” and “is clean.”
For supplies, you do not need a cabinet full of products. An all-purpose cleaner, a glass cleaner, a degreaser for the kitchen, a non-scratch scrub pad, microfiber cloths, and a vacuum will carry you through almost all of it.
One honest expectation: a real move-out clean takes a while. Empty-home deep cleaning runs roughly four to five times as long as a normal tidy-up, because you are getting inside everything. A small one-bedroom can eat the better part of a day. A larger home can take two. If you are short on time, or your deposit is big enough to matter, that math is usually the moment people decide to book it out instead.
Move-out vs. move-in vs. deep clean
People mix these three up constantly, and booking the wrong one is the number one way a cleaning day goes sideways. Here is the plain version, and a quick video on the move-in versus move-out difference if you want it spelled out.
A move-out clean is for an empty home. The furniture is gone and you want every surface reset for whoever is next. This is the deep one, and it is what the checklist above is built for.
A move-in clean is the lighter cousin. You book it for a new place that has already been emptied and probably cleaned once, where nobody has been living their daily life. So it skips the insides of cabinets and appliances and focuses on a fresh start before you unpack.
A deep clean sounds like a move-out clean, but the difference is simple: a deep clean happens while you still live there, with your stuff in place. If you want the full reset on a home you are staying in, that is our deep cleaning service, not a move-out clean.
The quick gut check: empty home, getting your deposit back? That is a move-out clean.

Answering Your Move-Out Cleaning Questions

It’s one of the best moves you can make for it. Seattle landlords generally expect a home returned in fresh, move-in condition, which means inside the oven and fridge, inside the cabinets, and along every baseboard. Our Dazzlers hit every line item a thorough move-out clean should cover. We can’t control a landlord’s decision, but we back our work with the simplest promise we have: love it or it’s free, plus we’ll send you $100.
Then you probably want a move-in clean, which is a deep clean of an empty home before you unpack, minus the inside-cabinet and inside-appliance work. If your new place is genuinely rough, book a move-out clean instead so everything gets done inside and out. And if you’re moving in and planning to stay, recurring cleaning is worth a look, because every visit costs less when there’s less buildup each time. ✨
Aim for a two-to-three-week head start. Move-out cleans take real, meticulous time, so our schedule fills fast, especially during the end-of-month Seattle moving rush. Don’t wait until lease-end week. Lock in your spot as soon as your moving dates are set, and if you’re in a last-minute pinch, call our office at (206) 424-9909 and we’ll do our best to fit you in.
Yes, on a move-out clean, every nook and cranny. A Dazzle move-out clean includes a full interior and exterior clean of your major appliances: the fridge, oven, microwave, dishwasher, washer, and dryer. We also open and clean every cabinet, drawer, and shelf in the home. If your fridge is on wheels, we’ll roll it out to get behind and underneath. (We leave a heavy oven in place to avoid scratching your floors, unless you ask us to move it.)
Document your victory before you hand over the keys. Walk the empty home and take bright, clear photos of the floors, countertops, clean appliance interiors, the insides of cabinets, and the bathrooms. A timestamped photo of your final exit protects you if a landlord ever disputes the home’s condition later. And if a walkthrough turns up a spot that needs a touch-up, let us know right away, we’ll come back and make it right before your inspection window closes.
Nope, most clients aren’t. Leave a key, share an entry code, use the leasing office, or we can set you up with a secure lockbox for free. Just make sure the home is empty and the utilities are on.
After, always after. For a true move-out clean, your home needs to be completely empty, no stray boxes, no furniture, no leftover food in the fridge. If things are still in the space, what you actually need is a regular deep clean, which uses different pacing and supplies. Confirm your vacancy date, then secure your Dazzle clean. Spots fill fast, especially around the end of the month, so we recommend booking about two to three weeks out.
