Each podcast will either be labeled as a client podcast or as an employee podcast.
And the only point of the podcast is to get you information in the way you want it. Okay, let’s get into it.
So this is the seventh episode of the Dazzle Cleaning Company Podcast. And in this episode, we are doing one of our Dazzle Voices segments, where we hear about working at Dazzle directly from Dazzle employees, and today we have the very fabulous Dazzle superstar, Erin Carmack with us. Hello, Erin.
Hi. How’s it going? Good. How are you? Good. Um, thanks for doing the podcast. Thanks for having me. Of course. Um, okay. So first, well, how long have you worked at Dazzle? Uh, it’s been a year and four months, I think. Nice. And is this your first time working in cleaning jobs Seattle-based companies? Yes. Okay. Well, technically, I, I was a cleaner at a hotel for like two days and I was like 19.
Oh, okay. That’s a lot different. Way. Yeah. And it wasn’t fun and I was like, yeah, I’m not doing this. That was a really long time ago. Yeah, it’s really hard. Yeah. When I So, I used to work on cruise ships, I think you know that, um, and I started out as a housekeeper and it was so much harder than cleaning jobs Seattle offers at Dazzle because you had to be so fast and clean so many rooms every day and Oh my gosh.
It was like everybody would get off the boat, then you had to remake all the rooms before people got back on the boat a few hours later. So it was like a frenzy every week for a So, um, what did you do before you worked at Dazzle? I was, uh, operations manager at a catering company and I was in charge of the warehouse that was full of props and, um, anything and everything you need for catering.
Right. Okay. Yeah. And we had like three trucks and, uh, we catered out to multiple venues. Okay, and then why did you decide to work at Dazzle? I found myself in a place where I needed a change. I started researching cleaning jobs Seattle-wide, and kept seeing different postings. At first, I was hesitant, but then I saw Dazzle’s ad, and I was like, you know what, I just need to try this.
I saw, it’s the, the tagline said, the gayest cleaning company in America, and I was like, I belong there, I need to be there, I need to at least try. And so I filled out the application online, and then it immediately took me to an appointment thing, and I was like, Oh, my gosh, they want to interview me already.
I was like, and so I just was like. I just need to go for it. Like we’ll just see and I honestly didn’t even think I was gonna like it or You know, like I was just really just reaching out to change my life, you know and um The interview was like for three days later or something and it was here at the dad’s office with logan and um I think you called me the next day or something, or I don’t know.
I think it was an email, but yeah. I knew right away we were going to hire you. I remember that interview. It was when Terry started at Dazzle. That’s right, yeah. He had like just started, yeah. I think he like came in that day during the interview and you, it was like a very quick interview. Like, yeah, this is Terry and it’s like, Oh, okay.
Didn’t mean anything, you know? It was a lot of interviews that day. So we were like both interviewing people, interviewing people in one of the offices. I was interviewing people out like in the main room and yeah, we were trying to like really work through them that day. Um, all right. Excellent. So, uh, when, is it, is it like what you expected it would be like being a cleaner dazzle?
I don’t think so. No. I don’t know necessarily what I really expected, but, but the, the job description and the things that it said in the, in the, like, ad. I was like, I think I could do all those things. I mean, especially because it said there was training. And I’m like, I mean, if there’s training, that’s great because I’m good at learning.
So, yeah. Yeah. Cause you don’t have to have cleaning experience to work at Dazzle. As you know, um, we look for people that are reliable and trustworthy people that operate with integrity because you can’t train on those kinds of things. And then we train how to actually do the job. Yeah. And the trainer was amazing.
So who was your trainer, Libby? Yeah, she’s awesome. It was a great experience. Okay. So you said that you saw that we’re the gayest cleaning company in America. And so you were like, I need to be there. Um, what is your relationship to the LGBTQ community? I worked in a neighborhood bar in the Beacon Hill.
It’s called Baja Bistro and I worked gay night for 10 years there. And basically we had every Wednesday night we had gay night and we would have a drag queen come and do a performance. And the bar is teeny tiny. It was like seven seats and four tables or five tables or something like that. It’s a really, really small, small place, but it would get.
And there need to be two bartenders. And it just, it was my, my family kind of, you know, cause I’m here in Seattle with no family, I moved away from my family, so I’ve created my own. And they always tend to end up being people who go to places like that. So I just, I feel like I am sort of part of the community, but.
Yeah, how does it feel being like working at Dazzle and not being like, um, LGBT or Q yourself. It’s, it’s wonderful because it doesn’t matter, you know, like it doesn’t matter. Even if I was, I mean, it just feels like I’m part of the team and I, as much as anyone else who might be part of the LGBTQ community, you know, and, um, I just, I’m that safe place.
You know what I mean? Like, that’s what I feel like. So, and when, I work with other people here at Dazzle. I just feel part of them, part of the group and part of the, and everybody accepts everybody and nobody really cares what community you belong to. And that’s, that’s refreshing and better than I ever expected, to be honest.
That is so good to hear. Um, all right. Awesome. So we are going to take a quick break to hear from our sponsor, which is. Dazzle. All right. Now we’re just going to take a little break. And while we do that, I’m going to do this.
The Dazzle Cleaning Company is proud to be Seattle’s only carbon neutral cleaning company. And now when you leave us a review on Google, we plant a tree. Head to dazzlecompany. com, click on Reviews in the menu bar, and then click on Write a Review and leave us an honest review. We love, love, love, love, love, love it when you add pictures or videos to your review.
Every time. If anyone leaves us a review, the non profit Review Forest plants a tree. And my oh my do we love trees.
Okay. No, I can’t. Nothing, like, comes right to my head. I’m sorry. So, the, no, no, don’t be. So, the first thing I’m going to ask you is I just, I know I do have them. I’m just Of course. Um, okay. So, we’ll come back. All right. we’re back with Erin. And, Erin, so, tell us about your position at Dazzle. What makes cleaning jobs Seattle cleaners do here different from other companies?
I run the Dazzle office, and I act as a backup cleaner when people call out, or if something happens, or, like, somebody needs a new vacuum. I’ve taken to them a job, I will drop everything and run it out to them, whatever. So yeah, I’m kind of like the, the dazzle gopher, or yeah, I keep the supplies in stock and the snacks in the office and talk to people and they come in and try to answer questions if I can, or, you know, give advice and stuff like that.
So you’re very likely to be a person that, um, a dazzle cleaner sees regularly. Yeah, especially if they come during office hours. Yeah, yeah. Um, okay, so, and, and you started out as a, um, full time cleaner before you moved into the office position. Yes. So tell us, like, walk us through what is a day, like, what is, tell us about a day in the life of a full time dazzle cleaner.
You wake up in the morning and get ready to go and make sure that you have your lunch with you and some snacks to keep you going throughout the day um, and it can be. Kind of a heavy day. I check my schedule and then I get ready to go to my first job I check my bag and I make sure I’ve got everything I’m gonna need that day because if you don’t check your bag and guarantee you You’re gonna forget something I’ve definitely done that Yeah, and then my schedule will tell me where to go it’ll give me directions and you know It’ll usually even tell me what to do about parking.
Nice. Alright. And what is the um, most challenging part of being a cleaner? Um, the most challenging part is probably being fast enough. Um, and I, yeah, I, I think that’s the most challenging part of being fast enough because, because I tend to be perfectionistic and trying to leave those thoughts alone and just keep going.
Don’t obsess. You’re very detail oriented. Yeah. So for me, that’s the hardest thing. Okay. And what’s the best part of the job? That’s what makes cleaning jobs Seattle residents trust so different at Dazzle – you’re basically your own boss. All you need to do is follow the Dazzle way and follow your schedule. You clock in you clock out you sign in you sign out you don’t I mean You come to the office you get your supplies you I mean, it’s it’s amazing Do you think that it’s a good job for introverts?
Oh, yeah, because you don’t have to, like, see very many people. You’re working pretty solo throughout the day. Even if, even if you’re on a team clean, which our deep cleans and everything are usually teams. You’re still on your own because you’re gonna go for five five minutes at the most you’re gonna talk to your team And then you’re gonna go off by yourself.
So for introverts, it’s absolutely wonderful You get your get to wear your headphones the whole entire time. You don’t have to listen to anybody else Maybe you’ll talk to a client. Maybe you won’t so yeah, and what what do you listen to when you’re cleaning? I listen to podcasts usually Sometimes I listen to some I forget what it’s called Uh Chill, chill hop or something.
That’s the chill, um, hip hop kind of music. Nice. It’s like relaxing, but, but still a little upbeat, you know? Oh yeah, cool. So I don’t want to try and go to sleep while I’m cleaning, but yeah, right. Um, I always listen to podcasts, the NPR app or audio books. Yeah. Audiobooks are something I should be doing, but yeah, podcasts are amazing.
Do you know about Libby? Yeah, podcasts are amazing. Libby, it’s like Audible, but it’s free. So it’s like a checkout books from a library. So you like link it to your library card and then you, so you don’t have to like pay for the books. It’s very cool. Nice, check, time to check that out, thank you. Yeah. Um, alright, so, we’re going to, wait, did we do Snappy News yet?
No, we did a break. So, okay. Cut all that out. All right. And now we’re going to go to this week’s snappy news.
And now it’s time for this week’s Snappy News, Snappy News, Snappy News.
What sets cleaning jobs Seattle-based at Dazzle apart? We don’t use chemicals. We use biodegradable, organic cleaning concentrates, um, We try to be good to the environment and I happen to notice a cleaning company in the building that we’re in cleaning a different office from ours and every time they leave the hallway smells like toxic chemicals so strong and like for the rest of the day, literally.
So I really, really appreciate that about dazzle and I think that that we’re different in that way. And I think that’s wonderful. And we’re carbon neutral. So, I mean, How many cleaning companies can say that? It’s true. Not very many, but I hope more soon. Me too. Erin, thank you so much for taking the time to tell us. Is there anything else you want to share about exploring cleaning jobs Seattle-wide? I don’t know if I’ve ever had better bosses before. That was pretty awesome in that, in that sense.
Awesome. Love that. Thank you. Um, all right. Well, Aaron, thank you so much. I really appreciate it. Thank you. It’s been awesome.
Thanks for listening to the Dazzle Podcast. Join us again for more dazzling info next week. Until then, have a fabulous gay ass week.
